How to Tie a Bowline Knot

The Bowline Knot is one of the most important knots you can know. It creates a secure loop that will not get stuck and is easy to tie and untie, even when tension has been applied to it. It is a reliable and strong knot that has been around for centuries. Although commonly used for boats, the Bowline Knot has also used to hoist and haul objects and to fasten one rope to another.

We used Olive Drab 550 Paracord in this tutorial, but any rope or cord can be used.

Step 1

Create a loop with the cord

Bring the free cord up through the loop from the underside

Place the free cord under the standing cord

Tighten the knot by pulling on the free cord while holding on to the standing line
